The Sickle Cell Association of Austin - Marc Thomas Foundation
a 501(c)3 non-profit organization was founded by Marc Thomas in 1997.
The organization began with three; his wife Linda Thomas and the late
Patricia Portley. Patricia Portley also suffered from sickle cell disease and
passed away at the age of 33.Upon moving to Austin, Marc became
frustrated with the level of care and support for sickle cell disease. Marc’s
passion and dedication for helping others with this chronic illness started
with his own frustration in finding appropriate support, as a person with
sickle cell disease. His role as advocate made him a hero and champion
among over 400 families affected by sickle cell disease. Through
education and awareness, this chapter has reached over 50,000.

Our Programs and Services
The well-being and welfare of people with sickle cell disease is our primary
concern. Therefore - we offer a variety of services to meet individual and
family needs. Our services encompass: education, outreach, awareness,
advocacy, support, assistance, camps for children, referrals and aiding in
research.
• Testing & Screening
We target and encourage testing and screening for at risk populations to help
identify individuals who may carry the silent sickle cell trait.
• Case Management
We provide case management for individuals and families with sickle cell
disease.
• Hemoglobinopathy Education
We provide hemoglobinopathy education to help people learn about the
implications of sickle cell disease so informed decisions can be made.
• Public Outreach
Our public outreach and education program is to educate the public at large
about sickle cell disease and the services provided.
• Support Groups
Adult support group meetings are held monthly. Children and Teen activities
are held monthly.

and families challenged with sickle cell disease.
